House must act to avert a government shutdown Friday night.
The Senate passed a bill extending on Thursday extending one of two continuing resolutions the government has been operating under since November.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the legislation “will give Congress more time to continue working on the appropriations process to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year.”
The extension will give members of the appropriations committees of both chambers additional time to approve dozens of bills to fund the government through September 30. Senator Patty Muray of Washington, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee said, “We will have an awful lot of work to get done in a short amount of time to finalize serious appropriations bills… that protect key investments in our country’s future.”
Senator Schumer and House Speaker Mike Johnson reached a $1.66 trillion topline agreement earlier this month. Spending on non-defense would be held at current levels while defense spending would see a 3 percent increase.
Quick action is expected by the House to avoid a government shutdown and an incoming snowstorm.
